Introduction
Introduce yourself
Look around the room for environmental clues e.g. walking frame or wheelchair
Take a general approach:
Unwell or well
Comment on growth - reduced growth can be from ataxia telangiectasia, metabolic disorder, or abetalipoproteinaemia
Look for obvious nystagmus, tremor, truncal ataxia
Comment on head size
Vitals - BP (raised in neuroblastoma or raised intracranial pressure), pyrexia (cerebellar abscess, meningitis, encephalitis)
IQ - reduced in ataxia telangiectasia and normal in Friedrich's ataxia
Dysmorphology
Limb movements (chorea in ataxia telangiectasia)
Lesions of skin - telangiectasia (bulbar conjunctivae and other areas of skin exposed to sun)
