The child with a neck swelling
Kayleigh is a 13-year-old girl who has recently noticed a neck swelling. Please examine her.
You present your findings.
Things the examiners will want to know:
- Goitre or no goitre
- Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
- Eye disease (hyperthyroidism) and hearing (hypothyroidism)
- Complications:
- Cognition (hypothyroidism)
- Growth - impaired with hypothyroidism, accelerate with hyperthyroidism
- Puberty - precocious with hypothyroidism
- CVS - flow murmur
Kayleigh is a 13-year-old girl with a neck swelling. On examination, she is well-grown and pre-pubertal. She has a fine tremor, sweaty palms, and an elevated resting heart rate. Her eye examination demonstrates some lid lag. Kayleigh has a firm, diffuse, neck swelling which is thyroid in origin. Kayleigh has hyperthyroidism.
