Introduction
  • Introduce yourself
  • Look around the room for environmental clues e.g. walking frame or wheelchair

Take a general approach:

  • Unwell or well
  • Comment on growth - reduced growth can be from ataxia telangiectasia, metabolic disorder, or abetalipoproteinaemia
  • Look for obvious nystagmus, tremor, truncal ataxia
  • Comment on head size
  • Vitals - BP (raised in neuroblastoma or raised intracranial pressure), pyrexia (cerebellar abscess, meningitis, encephalitis)
  • IQ - reduced in ataxia telangiectasia and normal in Friedrich's ataxia
  • Dysmorphology
  • Limb movements (chorea in ataxia telangiectasia)
  • Lesions of skin - telangiectasia (bulbar conjunctivae and other areas of skin exposed to sun)
